Types Of Cable
AIT deals with many types of cable. All of these forms have their own unique benefits. Your AIT Network Engineer can sit down with you and walk you through which cabling is best for your business needs. Here are just some of the types of cable we deal with every day:
Coax:
Coaxial (coax) cables provide an interference-free transfer of high-frequency electrical signals, most commonly for cable TV, computers, surveillance cameras, and phone use. Built around concentric layers of conductors and insulation, each signal in a coax cable is enclosed, providing very little interference. Coax cables come in many cable types, with RG-6 being the most common.
Ethernet Cable (copper):
Category 5e If you have a local area network (LAN) that needs to be connected, then you should be dealing with Category 5 cabling (CAT5e). This cable is best used with Ethernet in mind, with services that need secure, constant connection such as video and telephone. CAT5e is a versatile cable that is relatively cost effective to install in your workplace though this is being replaced by CAT6 which has higher data throughput by a fact of as much as 10x. There is no major physical difference between CAT5e and CAT6 so to distinguish read the cable markings.
Category 6 (CAT6) is more common place and is the standard for most installs. This “format” or form of cabling which can clock in speeds of 10 GB per second. CAT6a is foil shielded which is generally used in commercial environments where there is exposure to high voltage equipment. Earlier forms of cable (CAT3 & CAT5) found it hard to send that much data at one time without interference. CAT6a cables have virtually eliminated any interference. An installation of this type of cable is a bit trickier than others, as the cable is harder to work with, requires special connectors but, the results will speak for themselves.
CAT7 is the latest and greatest with much of the specification still being finalized. While not in the field it is worth mentioning as an eye out for the future. This is where the physical limitations of copper will likely occur at 100 GBS! Past these speeds fiber optic would be the preferred cabling method.
Fiber Optic:
Fiber optic cables are a huge leap from any other cabling before. The biggest reason is because fiber optics can transmit data over the 330’ limitation of copper wire. Rather than copper to transmit data they instead have a glass/ plastic compound core that while flexible is still very brittle. Higher speeds on fiber optic cable allow for the download a two-hour high-definition movie in less than 30 seconds. Fiber optics can have several “strands” in one casing. Casing can be of standard PVC jacketing or of metal. The fiber optic signal are generally converted back to “copper” wire electrical signals at the equipment such as a switch or router.
